About CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that's useful in many emergencies. Chest compressions circulate blood and oxygen, while providing rescue delivers oxygen.
Over 400,000 people die each year from Cardiac arrest (when the heart stops beating). Over 350,000 of those deaths happens in public. Correctly performing CPR can triple the chance of survival.
AHA does not have a set age requirement, just that the person be able to physically perform CPR. Since CPR is performed using the large muscles of the upper body and not the arms, most people are able to learn and perform CPR correctly.
It may be possible as there are modifications to performing CPR. CPR training teaches to recognize an emergency and be prepared to act. It incorporates the steps of calling 911 and getting an AED.
An AED or Automatic External Defibrillator, is a small portable device that can analyze heart rhythms and if needed provide electrical energy to "shock" the heart. Some rhythms are lethal and need defibrillation or medications to correct them. Studies show that survival rate is greatly increased with early defibrillation.
